Nokia 6600 slide review: Beautiful to use

Tiny, yet remarkably solid, like a pebble tumbled smooth by the waves, there's something about Nokia 6600 slide that's really hard to resist. By the way, minimalist, extra smooth and exclusive stand equally well for any of the 6600 pair. While flip for gals and slide for lads may not exactly be set in concrete, gender-free demand is more likely for the black 6600 slide.

Of the same build and pricing, both the yesterday's 6600 flip and the today's 6600 fold are a treat to look at and handle. The differences in gear are minor, boiling down to a fair try to fine-tune the supply. The OLED screen and electromagnetic push-to-open in the flip are swapped for a 3-megapixel shooter and USB-on-the-go. Little secrets won't stay in the closet but there's enough disarming charm to go around.

Key features:

* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, dual-band UMTS
* Accelerometer for tap-for-time and tap-to-mute
* 2.2" 16M-color QVGA display
* 3 megapixel camera, autofocus and LED flash
* VGA video recording at 15fps
* S40 user interface, 5th edition, FP1
* Bluetooth (with A2DP) and USB-on-the-go
* Stereo FM radio with RDS
* microSD card slot (up to 8 GB), 512MB included
* Rich preinstalled application package
* Nokia Maps
* Compact and extra smooth
* Sweet oval shapes and neat slider design
* Large capacity BL-4U battery (Li-Ion 1000 mAh)

Main disadvantages:

* Fingerprint magnet, hard to clean
* Rigid battery cover latch
* Memory card slot under the battery, no hot-swap
* No camera shutter key
* Below par camera quality
* Display easily gets scratched
* No smart dialing
* No multi-tasking
* No office document viewer

The sleek and smooth Nokia 6600 slide is taking the soft almost seamless contours of its flip sibling another step up. While the hinge of the 6600 fold is an inevitable abrupt cut, the polished rounded edges of the tiny slider are kept intact. Unfortunately its great strength is also its greatest weaknesses - the ease, with which Nokia 6600 slide catches fingerprints, is terrifying. To make things worse, smudges are not that easy to clean.

Signature feature of the 6600 pair, tap commands are adding to the pleasure of handling the 6600 slide. Arguably, tap-for-time seems to make a lot more sense in the flip for adding an element of surprise with the hidden outer OLED screen, but we get it in the 6600 slide too anyway. Tap-to-mute is the second available command, which undoubtedly is a nice little perk to have.

Well, it's more than obvious the 6600 slide stakes quite a lot on exterior, so let's see if it repays. We're back after the jump with handling, looks and feel.

Smoking hot body, brilliant looks, user-friendly interface and almost no value for money, but still packing quite a punch - Nokia 6600 fold is exactly the kind of meal to order from an unpriced menu. The OLED screen, the cool magnetic flip and the mirror front panel just make it all the sweeter and kind of make sure it feels more at home in designer handbags than pockets. Now, that's where we come in with a little bit of good sense chicks will ignore anyway. And who knows, they may be right in the end.

Key features

* Cute design
* Compact body
* 2.13" 16M-color OLED display of QVGA resolution
* Secondary external 1.36" hidden OLED display (128 x 160 pixels)
* Series 40 5th edition UI with Feature Pack 1
* Cool push-to-open flip mechanism
* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual-band UMTS support
* Tap-for-time and tap-to-mute
* 2 megapixel fixed focus camera
* Status LED
* microSD card slot
* Stereo FM radio
* Nokia Maps for S40 application

Main disadvantages

* Steep price for the features offered
* Unimpressive camera performance
* Non hot-swappable memory card
* Fingerprint-magnet front
* The large magnetic contacts spoil the internal looks
* No HSDPA
* No smart dialing
* No multi-tasking
* No office document viewer

Bold color scheme and intriguing one-touch flip, Nokia 6600 fold sure knows how to make a good first impression. The gradated mirror front looks and feels extra smooth and the exotic OLED display adds another touch of exclusivity. And it definitely isn't a "Mirror, mirror on the wall, is there anyone there at all".

A double tap on the opaque glazed front will light up the hidden secondary screen for time and missed events.

Nokia N96 review King's new clothes

Every time Nokia Nseries numbering goes up a notch geeks are holding their breath. Well, geeks - including us - are ordinary human beings, but in the case of Nokia N96 they'd been holding their breath since February. The time this multimedia monster picked to actually hit the shelves must have made quite a few people fear it being already outdated.

Being a successor of the Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N96 has some king-size spec sheet to top and it can't be accused of not trying. There's FP2, double the built-in storage and DVB-H. The bloodline is strong but the crown is heavy and ancestral sins will be held against the heir twofold. The modest battery capacity and the downgraded CPU do raise some questions that need their answers. Join us for an out-and-out review of Nokia's latest top-of-the-shelf offer. Let's see if it has got the performance to walk in them shoes size N95.
Key features:

* 2.8" 16M-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
* 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and AF assist light
* Built-in DVB-H TV tuner
* Symbian OS 9.3 with S60 3.2 UI
* Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM
* 3G with HSDPA support
* Quad-band GSM support
* Wi-Fi with UPnP technology
* Built-in GPS with A-GPS functionality and 3 months of free voice-guided navigation
* Dual slide design with dedicated gaming/audio keys
* Massive 16GB onboard storage
* microSD card slot with microSDHC support
* Built-in accelerometer for UI auto-rotation
* 3.5 mm audio jack
* TV out
* Stereo FM Radio with RDS
* Car charger in the retail package
* VGA video recording at 30fps
* USB and Bluetooth v2.0
* One free N-gage game and Transformers movie preloaded
* Keypad locking slide key

Main disadvantages:

* Inadequate battery life
* No camera lens protection
* The N81-inspired design
* No office document editing out of the box
* Doesn't charge via the USB port
* Dreadful camera key
* Cheap looking keypad
* Unreasonably hefty price tag

Nokia N96 comes to top the Nokia multimedia portfolio, packing almost every single feature you can think of. It extends the functionality of its predecessor - Nokia N95 8GB with 16GB of internal memory, DVB-H TV receiver, and the latest version of the Symbian OS. There are also some more minor upgrades including music keys on the front panel, a kickstand (we love that one) for more comfortable video watching, Navi wheel and dual-LED flash. On the negative side, the CPU has been tripped up but we are yet to see how this affects the performance.

Samsung i7110 pops up – Symbian S60 plus 5 megapixel camera on-board

A new Samsung handset appeared online before its official announcement. As it seems, we will be seeing a new Symbian OS-based smartphone with a 5 megapixel camera - the Samsung i7110.

Samsung are obviously embracing the power and popularity of the Symbian S60 OS. Their latest four-digit model utilizes it to its full potential. Unfortunately, we don't have any spec details on the handset and we can only judge by the photos.

The Samsung i7110 is obviously UMTS-enabled (a video call camera on the front) and it packs a 5 megapixel auto focus camera lens on the back. A flash is also present - but we can't really tell whether it's a xenon one or a regular LED one.

he battery cover seems to be all-metal following the design of the Samsung Soul b. There's a microSD memory card slot on left side. A bit of a letdown is they will be using the proprietary Samsung connectivity port instead of the universal microUSB variety found on the Samsung i8510 INNOV8.

We are really looking forward to getting some official info on the Samsung i7110 in the near future. And we also hope that GPS or at least Wi-Fi is on board.

Sony Ericsson T700 unveiled at last - 3 MP camera, sleek and slim

It seems that Sony Ericsson aren't wasting their time recently. Their latest Sony Ericsson T700 sports only 10mm of thickness but disappoints with a fixed focus camera and an overly used design concept. While it will probably appeal to only Sony Ericsson hard-liners with nostalgic memories of Sony Ericsson T650, it's still worth the news scoop.

Sony Ericsson finally unveiled their latest handset - the Sony Ericsson T700. Photos of the device leaked several times in the past month so we can't say that we are greatly surprised.

Coming with a moderate amount of on-board features, but with an affordable price tag, the new bar-shaped T700 is expected to impress with looks and price point rather than with functionality.

Sony Ericsson T700 comes with quad-band GSM support and single-band 3G support with HSDPA. A 3.2 megapixel snapper is also onboard but no autofocus (sorry!). The handset also packs a 2-inch 262K color display with QVGA resolution.

Measuring 104 x 48 x 10 mm and weighing only 78 g the Sony Ericsson T700 is even more compact than its predecessor - the Sony Ericsson T650. Some of its other features are Bluetooth with A2DP, USB connectivity and up to 25MB of user memory. There is also a M2 card slot for expanding that amount and a 512MB memory card included in the retail package. An FM radio with RDS completes the list of features.

Sony Ericsson T700 is going to hit the shelves in Q4 of the year at an estimated retail price of less than 200 euro. The color version available will be Black on Silve, Black on Red and Shining Silver.

HTC Touch Diamond reincarnated as O2 XDA Ignito

O2 have finally settled on a name for their own HTC Touch Diamond – say hello to the O2 XDA Ignito. Having in mind the warm relations between HTC and O2, it's no wonder that one of the hottest names on the market arrived in the carrier’s portfolio.

In terms of functionality the O2 XDA Ignito will be identical to the HTC Touch Diamond. The HTC Diamond 100 platform has been used for the XDA Ignito instead of HTC Victor (used for T-Mobile MDA Compact IV). This means the Ignito will get the full 192 MB of RAM. On the other hand it also suggests that the XDA Ignito will also feature the design-over-practicality diamond-styled back of the original Touch Diamond.

The O2’s touch to the device is most obvious in the TouchFLO 3D UI which is now colored in the company’s traditional blue and white colors. The O2 XDA Ignito is expected to start retailing as soon as August 12th, which is less than a week away. As of now however there is no word on its pricing.

Sony Ericsson G705 surfaces, GPS and a 3 megapixel snapper on board

With just days from the official announcement of the three latest Walkmans, Sony Ericsson are making headlines again - this time with a relatively slim slider, called the Sony Ericsson G705. It's not an official announcement though, but those images look real enough.

The new Sony Ericsson G705, which is said to be announced within two weeks (another Sony Ericsson announcement so soon?), is a slider, which features a 3 megapixel camera and a built-in GPS receiver.

Sony Ericsson G705

Unfortunately, the 3 megapixel camera doesn't feature auto focus (what a bummer!) and it has a LED flash only. Obviously, Sony Ericsson are turning their backs on xenon flashes, which they pioneered in the first place. The camera will also obviously support geo-tagging thanks to the built-in GPS receiver.

Sony Ericsson G705

The Sony Ericsson G705 also has 128MB of internal memory and a M2 memory card slot to expand it further.

Sony Ericsson G705

So far we don't have any info on availability but we'll keep you posted as new information surfaces.

Skype finally available for Windows Mobile 6.1

Skype has finally been updated to run of Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. WM 6.1 devices are spawning recently and it was about time to add support for those too. We successfully installed and used the Skype for Windows Mobile client on both the Samsung i900 Omnia and the HTC Touch Diamond.

Chatting over Skype is not bad at all; unfortunately making calls over HSDPA is still a mucky business when it comes to voice quality. It's much better on Wi-Fi internet connection.

Another drawback is that during calls the touchscreen remains active and you are bound for accidental cheek-and-ear presses on the display. Also the green and red receiver keys don't seem to work for Skype call management and video calls are not an option despite both handsets have dedicated video call cameras.

Making a call via Skype (HTC Touch Diamond)

The new Skype 2.2.0.45 however failed to make use of the full Samsung Omnia screen real estate in all application windows. Yes, it gets used properly when you are viewing your contacts list or the settings page, however most of the other windows leave an unused white or black band at the bottom of the screen. At least it doesn't hurt functionality.

The unusual display resolution pays a price in applications such as the new Skype client

Sony Ericsson W902, W595 and W302 finally go official

Celebrating the Walkman-seriеs third birthday, Sony Ericsson revealed three new Walkman phones today, along with a new set of music accessories. The Sony Ericsson W902, W595 and W302 weren't really the best kept secret, as their live photos leaked a week ago but still we enjoy finally meeting them officially. Along with these new Walkmans Sony Ericsson introduced three sets of headphones, three new wireless stereo speakers and a phone case.
Sony Ericsson W902

Sony Ericsson W902 is the most feature-packed among the new devices, coming with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with a LED flash and hardware music keys. It has a 262K color 2.2" QVGA TFT display and 25MB of built-in memory. Quite as expected, Sony Ericsson W902 will also feature an 8GB M2 memory card in its retail package to extend the available storage.

Sony Ericsson W902

The 3G and HSDPA-enabled W902 measures 110 x 49 x 11.7mm and weighs 99.8 grams. The FM radio with RDS and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) come to compliment the music capabilities of the quad-band W902.

The Sony Ericsson W902 will also offer auto screen rotation thanks to the built-in accelerometer and image geotagging. Since it doesn't have a GPS receiver, the geotagging feature will rely on cell towers to approximate your location.

The Sony Ericsson W902 will be available in Volcanic Black, Wine Red and Earth Green versions from Q4 of 2008.
Sony Ericsson W595

Sony Ericsson W595 comes next in line sporting quad-band GSM support and 3G with HSDPA. The slider also boasts a 3 megapixel camera that unfortunately has no autofocus. The display will be a 2.2" one of QVGA resolution, capable of showing up to 262K colors.
There is also no 3G on the W302 but luckily the sweet quad-band GSM with EDGE support is left intact. FM radio with RDS, USB and stereo Bluetooth are some of the other features included. The built-in memory will be 20MB and there will be a M2 slot for expanding it.

Sony Ericsson W302 will be as compact as 100 x 46 x 10.5 mm and will weigh merely 78g. It will be available in n Midnight Black and Sparkling White and will hit the shelves in Q4 2008.

Seemingly a perfect blend between a full-size camera lens and a mobile phone, the X908 is one intriguing piece of Chinese engineering. Add dual SIM support and built-in analog TV tuner and you've got yourself a tasty package.

With a retractable 3x optical zoom lens on the back and a 2 megapixel camera on the front, the X908 should probably be counted as one high-end cameraphone. With a yet unidentified brand, the X908 packs dual SIM, dual microSD slot design and offers a 262K-color touchscreen 3-inch QVGA TFT display for watching your favorite TV shows on-the-go. There's also a built-in FM radio tuner and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP).

The 8 megapixel X908

If those are not enough for you, another intriguing feature is the pre-installed NES emulator, which allows playing a wide choice of Nintendo games.

The real downers (although not really surprising) are the lack of 3G and the dual-band GSM support. You can't have it all, we guess, but this device comes real close. Still we wouldn't be too euphoric about this phone before we see it perform but it seems promising to say the least. And we really hope that those 8 megapixels are the real deal and not some interpolated stuff.

The dimensions of the X908 are 115 x 55 x 20mm and its weight is the rather hefty 140g. There are still no indications when or whether it will arrive to European markets.

Nokia N78 review Bitter sweet

Love it or leave it won't do here, we're afraid. Love it or hate it is more like it. There's so much to get excited about with Nokia N78. The excellent display and capable camera, topped with Navi wheel, FM transmitter, GPS and Wi-Fi sure round off a nice deal. And yes, the latest FP 2 is a downright treat. If only… Well, you must know already what we think of the package. Anyway, you're welcome to read on. Nokia N78 has a whole review up ahead to unleash its potential and a lifetime to beg for a facelift.

Nokia N78 official photos

Key features:

* 2.4" 16M-color display of QVGA resolution
* 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash
* S60 UI with Feature Pack 2
* FM transmitter
* Navi wheel
* 3G with HSDPA
* microSD card slot, 2GB card in the retail package
* GPS receiver and 3 months of free voice-guided navigation
* Wi-Fi
* Stereo speakers
* 3.5mm standard audio jack
* FM radio with RDS
* Bluetooth and USB connectivity (microUSB port)

Main disadvantages:

* Keypad or whatever they call it
* Shaky battery cover
* Not our kind of design
* Call, End and C key placement
* FM transmitter has weak signal

Nokia N78 stacks up just below the top of the multimedia phone market. The megapixel count and screen size are probably the only things to stop it from directly competing with the N95. It is still quite close and even offers a few features that the omnipresent Nseries ruler lacks.

A nice - even if somewhat humble - alternative of Nokia N78 is Samsung i550w. Carrying a very similar feature-pack, it trades the FM transmitter and the Navi wheel for a trackball and a larger 2.6" screen. The best part about the Samsung is that it costs a great deal less than the Nokia N78, retailing at about 260 euro. Now, the FM transmitter and FP 2 are not exactly the first things one would choose to trade, but we can understand those willing to save themselves some money.

Another handset to rival the N78 is Nokia N82. The best cameraphone by Nokia to date is currently available for about 300 euro. The 5 megapixel camera comes with protective cover and Xenon flash, while a built-in accelerometer is also on offer. On the other hand, N82 too lacks the FM transmitter, which might sound as a deal-breaker to some.

It's no news any more that we've been playing with one of the hotties of the season for some time now. Sony Ericsson W980 made a glorious entrance but we're yet to see about the exit. Set to top the Walkman feature phone lineup, W980 carries along 8 GB worth of storage, a 3 megapixel camera and a built-in accelerometer. The touch-sensitive keys and the latest Sony Ericsson feature phone interface add to the excitement. Still not interested? Then try to think of another music phone with a built-in FM transmitter!

Sony Ericsson W980 official photos

Key features:

* 2.2" 262K-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
* 3 megapixel camera
* 8 gigs of onboard memory
* FM transmitter
* Great user interface
* 3G with HSDPA
* External 262K-color display with a resolution of 176 x 176 pixels
* Walkman 3.0 music player
* Shake control
* Light effects
* Touch-sensitive keys
* Ambient light sensor
* Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP profile support
* USB 2.0 connectivity
* FM radio with RDS
* Good battery life
* Comfortable keypad

Main disadvantages:

* No auto focus nor flash for the camera
* Inconvenient camera lens location
* Shiny surface a fingerprint nightmare
* Display kinda small for a high-end phone
* Awkward context keys
* Camera interface not user-friendly

Aiming to meet some high-end demand, Sony Ericsson W980 brings the cream of the music centered niceties of the house. The clamshell form factor and the quite eccentric features such as FM transmitter and light effects make it hard to point a finger at its main market rivals.

One suspect that comes to mind is Samsung G400 Soul. Featuring the same flip-up bodywork, it trades the FM transmitter and the large storage space for a 5 megapixel camera. You figure if it's a square deal or else. If the G400 Soul has some of those good Samsung audio quality genes, it's in for a match with Sony Ericsson W980. With no information about the cost of either at this stage, the two devices might actually end up running in different lanes pricewise.

Anyway, we think the odds with W980 are towards a hefty price tag, which opens the door to some serious smartphone competition.

Now, one last thing before we get to the point. We should warn you that ours is a pre-release unit, so some minor changes are likely before D-day. Our units was rock solid and gave us no problems at all. So, significant changes to the overall user experience are quite unlikely.

Two new devices were revealed by T-Mobile at a press conference held in Germany - the MDA Compact IV and MDA Vario IV, both close relatives to the recently announced HTC Touch Diamond.

Actually, the MDA Compact IV is the T-Mobile version of the HTC Touch Diamond with a revamped design - a bit larger, more rounded edges, and most importantly - a lot lighter at 98 g as compared to 110 g of the HTC Touch Diamond. The proprietary 3D TouchFLO menu is also changed - now it turns up in white and magenta colors. The system RAM however has shrunk to 128MB as opposed to 192MB in the HTC Touch Diamond.

MDA Compact IV

By the way O2 also have their own incarnation of the HTC Diamond platform called quite expectedly the O2 XDA Diamond.

MDA Compact IV vs. HTC Touch Diamond: the differences are only cosmetic

All the other specifications of the MDA Compact IV remain the same as those of the Touch Diamond so users can enjoy a GPS receiver, Wi-Fi and a 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera. Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, the T-Mobile MDA Compact IV packs a 2.8-inch VGA display and is extremely thin at 12mm. It has a built-in accelerometer which allows screen auto rotation. Additionally, it would have the sweet 4GB of storage memory (no memory card slot though). FM radio with RDS and a proprietary HTC mini-USB port are also on board along with Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR.

The T-Mobile MDA Compact IV will be available in July at currently unknown price.

The T-Mobile MDA Vario IV is the other device which was revealed at the conference. It's based on the rumored and yet unannounced HTC Raphael platform. HTC themselves haven't announced a commercial device based on that platform, so the MDA Vario IV in a way gives a glimpse of a future HTC handset too.

MDA Vario IV

The T-Mobile MDA Vario IV will obviously hit on the HTC TyTN II since its main accent is the full sliding QWERTY keyboard - surprisingly the thickness of the device however has been kept to 18mm.

The MDA Vario IV is a communication expert, offering a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS support and full HSDPA 7.2Mbps. On top of this are the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, and GPS connectivity.

The device runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS and is powered by the same Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 Mhz processor. The memory department has also got a boost to 256 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM, this time expandable via a microSD card slot.

The display remains the same as in Touch Diamond - 2.8" 65K TFT touchscreen, with a VGA resolution (480 x 640 pixels). Keeping the same 3.2 MP camera, the MDA Vario IV has got a major boost in the battery performance, thanks to the 1340 mAh battery as opposed to the 900 mAh one in the Touch Diamond.

The actual dimensions of the new QWERTY communicator are 103 x 52 x 18 mm and weight 158 g. The MDA Vario IV is due for release in the autumn, yet its pricing is still unknown.

Asus P750

Asus P750 lands on the crowded Windows Mobile Pro scene but it sure isn't dropped defenseless. The Asus PocketPC is among the best equipped Windows Mobile devices on the market. A hardware multi-tap keyboard to back up that 2.6" TFT touchscreen, HSDPA, fast 520 MHz Marvel CPU, Wi-Fi, built-in SiRF Star III GPS, stereo Bluetooth and a 3 megapixel autofocus camera certainly sound like the right ammo to take on HTC-branded devices.

Still, many might have second thoughts about buying a handset by a maker with not so long a history in Windows Mobile. To them we say we found the Asus P750 enjoyable at first glance and the first impressions are of a handset that can top almost anything HTC throws at it. In case we've got you interested enough, join us to find out if the potent PocketPC carries its feature load with style.

Key features:

* Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro
* UMTS/HSDPA 3.6Mbps support with video calls
* 2.6" 65K-color TFT touchscreen display with QVGA resolution
* 520 MHz Marvel CPU
* 64MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM
* 3.15 megapixel auto focus camera and a secondary VGA video-call camera
* Wi-Fi support
* Built-in SiRF Star III GPS receiver (A-GPS support)
* USB and stereo Bluetooth support
* microSDHC memory card slot
* High-quality materials and excellent construction
* Hardware keypad
* Rich retail package
* Microsoft Office viewing/editing suite
* Pre-installed business card scanning application
* Pre-installed additional time management applications
* Pre-installed calls filtering application
* Pre-installed Remote Desktop and Remote Presenter applications

Main disadvantages:

* Tri-band GSM only
* Hefty size
* Limited amount of RAM
* 2.6 inch relatively small (in PocketPC terms)
* Camera is really poor (we guess it might be a faulty unit)
* Video recording resolution is way too low
* No multimedia software preinstalled (Samsung offer that)
* No Task Manager application preinstalled (HTC offer that)
* No alternative web browser pre-installed (both Samsung and HTC offer that)
* Asus Launcher application not customizable

ASUS P750 doesn't seem to have a straight replica in the HTC lineup - the same holds true for the Eten PocketPCs too. That hardware multi-tap keypad really sets it apart - usually in the PocketPC world it's either no keyboard at all or a full QWERTY.

Unfortunately, the Asus P750 doesn't have a good enough advantage over QWERTY devices sizewise. It's on the large side while the display is below the 2.8-inch standard that seems to reign the industry. Still, it's not a big difference, and the tad smaller screen wasn't that much of a bother to us.

Asus have only recently announced their thumb-optimized Home screen plug-in, so essentially you can't rely on getting a full thumb-operated device straight out of the box. You have to rely on the stylus in most of the occasions. That's not necessarily a big thing, but we find this to be the major weakness of most current PocketPCs. And yes, we admit that it was the Apple iPhone that served as an eye-opener in this repect.

At a London live, Nokia presented the long-awaited E-series newcomers - Nokia E66 and Nokia E71. The two handsets are Nokia craftsmanship at its highest and high-tech goodies galore: auto focus cameras, Wi-Fi, GPS and the power of the latest Symbian S60 UI.

The Nokia E71 packs a full hardware QWERTY keypad and its design feels somewhat Blackberry-esque although it's actually a successor of the Nokia E61i. Nokia E71 brings much more style to the E-series with a girth of mere 10mm. It's impressively compact for its form factor but that in turn has shrinked the display to 2.36 inches (as opposed to the impressive 2.8" screen of E61i).

Nokia E71 White Steel and Nokia E71 Grey Steel

Hardwarewise, the E71 offers the latest in smartphone with a built-in GPS receiver, which works with Nokia Maps, 3 megapixel auto focus camera and - of course - HSDPA and Wi-Fi. There is also the microSD card slot to expand the available 110MB memory with up to 8GB worth of additional storage.

The Nokia E66 is the same business-grade device as the Nokia E71, without the QWERTY keyboard. It's more compact but screen real estate is not sacrificed at all - the Nokia E66 has a 2.4" QVGA TFT display. Since it also sports a built-in accelerometer, you can also enjoy screen auto rotation, as well as silencing of incoming calls when the device is facing down. Other than that, the specs remain identical, making it an equaly sweet gadget.

Nokia E66 White Steel and Nokia E66 Grey Steel

Both devices also feature an Infrared port (no fooling), as well as a microUSB port and Bluetooth (A2DP and EDR).

Email is the highlight in both devices, as they support a wide range of personal and corporate email standards such as Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email solution, along with System Seven and Visto Mobile. Encryption is also on board, as well as mobile VPN support.

The Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 also come with a new switch mode (in the profiles menu) for switching between personal and work home screens.

Clad in stainless steel and etched graphics (E51-style), the new handsets will be available in grey steel or white steel colors. Both Nokia E71 and Nokia E66 are expected to begin shipping in July and are expected to retail at 350 euro before taxes and subsidies.
